Philip J. Callahan, 44, of Danvers passed peacefully after a brief illness on Jan. 10, 2019. He was the loving husband of Carrie (Merrick) Callahan and loving father of Emma and Drew. Originally from Peabody, MA, Phil graduated from Peabody High School in 1992. He went on to work his way up to the job he was most proud; Superintendent at Lakeside Cemetery in Wakefield. Phil enjoyed camping, the beach, York Maine, Falmouth, coaching baseball, basketball and softball. He really enjoyed watching his children’s sporting events including DGS, DNLL and DGTB. He enjoyed participating in local road racing events and running the weekly D5k in Danvers where his kids would join him. He loved the outdoors. He leaves his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Lucille and Ed Merrick of Peabody, two sisters, sister Michelle Woodruff and her husband Tracy of Indiana and Lisa Tracy and her husband Joe of Wisconsin. Also leaving a sister-in-law Dawn Grant of Middleton, a brother-in-law Eddie Merrick and his fiance Jen of Peabody. He leaves his loving nieces and nephews who adored him; Aaron, Erin, Josh, Kaycee, Natalia and Stevie. He was the son of the late Shirley Johnson and brother-in-law to the late Michael Grant. Phil also leaves behind many friends who he loved as family.

Phil was such a treasure for the Lakeside Cemetery and his love for it was evident in the way he took such exceptional care of the beautiful grounds there. I first met Phil as he showed me a grave site at Lakeside for my husband who had passed away after a brief illness. Phil's level of compassion and understanding was remarkable to me at that time, and eight years later I still remember it. Your husband is with you and surrounding you with love every day and will always. Peace and Prayers, Virginia Samalis

Carrie, I hope you and your children can find peace at this very difficult time. Although I have never had the pleasure of meeting Phil, from what I am reading here and hearing about him, he seemed like a remarkable, kind, loving person who loved life and his family so very much. You are also an amazing woman who I have had the pleasure of knowing for many years from our childhood. You will always hold the memories of Phil close to your heart. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. May he rest in eternal peace! Tricia Drummey (Napolitano)

Like so many others,I am both shocked and saddened by this awful news. When we were younger Phil was a little brother to me.I slept over their house with Michelle just about every weekend.Phil, Michelle and I drove Lisa crazy always sneaking into her room to play Atari. That is just one memory out of a million that I have relived over the past few weeks.I was so happy to reconnect with him on Facebook and to see the sweet little boy grew into a sweet "not so little" man! My heart is broken for the entire family! The world truly lost an incredible human. I hope you can find comfort in the beautiful memories of Phil.God Bless Phil and all of his family and friends. Love,Cathy Z.
