Obituary:

Middleton, MA—Lloyd F. Ballard of Middleton, husband of Martha (McGoldrick) Ballard, passed peacefully at his home, surrounded by love, on December 5th, 2018. Lloyd was born on October 5, 1920, in Boston’s neighborhood of Jamaica Plain, to Austin and Esther Ballard. His family settled in Middleton, and Lloyd ultimately made a home in the same town with Martha, his wife of nearly 70 years (formerly of Lynn), and seven children at a residence on Riverview Drive. He and his two brothers were called up to service at the outset of World War II. Lloyd served first with the MP Escort Guard and later with the 82nd Airborne. All three brothers returned home safely. A carpenter by trade, Lloyd was skilled in many other areas. His career included first working as a pipe fitter at Pitco Frialator Co. and later at McGoldrick Construction & Builder, Inc. in Lynn, as a member of the Carpenter’s Union until he retired. He had a passion for playing guitar and shared that love with his family and friends, inspiring others to play as well. Lloyd could often be found perched on his stool, guitar in hand, in front of his favorite sheet music pieces. As a younger man he studied agriculture and attended classes at Essex Agricultural Academy. This interest gave rise to an extensive backyard garden where Lloyd raised many vegetables from seed—he was known for his Big Boy tomatoes. Horseback riding was another talent that he enjoyed as a young man; Lloyd owned a horse named Tony, but had to re-home him when he was called up for service. He had a keen appreciation for antiques, tools, and memorabilia, and was fond of sharing their values with anyone who would listen. Living within looking distance of the Ipswich River, Lloyd was able to enjoy years with loved ones around a custom-built family table under a gazebo, watching local wildlife passing in and around the backyard. Instant scratch tickets were a constant at the gazebo as well as his ‘place’ at the breakfast table. Lloyd is survived by his wife, Martha, and his sister Pauline (Ballard) Kolodziej. He is pre- deceased by his brothers Wayne and Gerald; his sister Cora (Ballard) MacLean; his daughter Kathy(Ballard) Faino; and his sons Kevin and Sean. Surviving children include Brian Ballard and his wife, Lisa; Maureen (Ballard) Haley and her husband, Jerry Gilchrist; Kent Ballard and his partner Shelby Dean; and Brett Ballard. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Also of mention is Lori Maytum, a long time family friend who has been lovingly supportive to Lloyd and the family.

My deepest heartfelt condolences to all of you. May his laughter and legacy live on forever. Thank you for many years of good times and memories shared. Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers. - Tina Homan
