Ralph H. Matthews

Ralph H. Matthews Jr, 98, of Middleton MA died peacefully at home on April 4, 2024. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Shirley, of 66 years. Son of Ralph H and Edna Mae (Wormstead) Matthews of Saugus MA. Father of Robert and wife Robin Matthews of Marshfield and Greenacres, FL, Elaine and husband Steven Sogoloff of Peabody MA, Paul and wife Kelley Matthews of Ponte Vedra, FL and Ralph W and wife Judy Matthews of Oviedo, FL. Grandfather of eleven and Great-Grandfather of ten children.

Ralph served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during WWll where he spent time in France, Germany and the Philippines. Returning after the war he completed the General Electric Apprentice Course in Lynn, MA and worked as a Planner in the Medium Steam Turbine Division for over 40 years. Ralph was an avid fisherman, hauling in many large Striped Bass from the Merrimack River, flounder and smelts which he enjoyed cooking. He loved swimming and boating on Pleasant pond in Wenham, MA. Ralph and Shirley enjoyed vacations with their children in the White Mountains of NH.

He was a big fan of the New England Patriots and high school football. He attended every high school football game of his hometown, Saugus Sachems! He also grew the best tomatoes from seed every season.
