Obituary:

Marie (Toomey) Melvin, 64, of Hubbardston and formerly of Danvers, Massachusetts, died peacefully at home on Thursday January 12, 2017 following a noble battle with cancer, surrounded by her loving family. Marie was born on November 27, 1952 in Everett, MA to late parents Bill and Rose (Judge) Toomey. Shortly thereafter, she and family moved to Danvers, MA where Marie graduated from Danvers High School in 1970. Marie worked as a coordinator in pharmaceutical clinical research for a majority of her career, which presented her with the opportunity to relocate to Holly Springs, NC between the years of 2008-2013. Upon her retirement, Marie moved back to Massachusetts and settled into a lovely home in Hubbardston where she was most recently employed part-time with the Hubbardston Board of Health. Marie was a kind-spirited individual who enjoyed crafting, decorating, and spending time in her garden. Always one to take a chance on the distressed plant rack at garden stores, Marie knew that with a little love anything could bloom to its full extent and bring beauty to the world around her. The colorful artwork of Mary Englebreit consistently brought a smile to her face and could be found throughout her home and offices. Marie was never one to pass up the opportunity to spend several hours scanning the shelves of craft stores or her favorite store, Christmas Tree Shops, where she never failed to find the perfect piece to compliment her abundance of seasonal décor. Most of all, Marie loved the opportunity to soak in the natural ambiance and warmth of the sun at her favorite beaches in Gloucester, MA. Marie is survived by her husband, Patrick Melvin, with whom she happily shared the last 47 years of her life; her daughter and pride of her life, Jenna Newbegin and husband Jared of Danvers, MA; her beloved dog, Casey, whom she adoringly ensured was clothed in a bandana that matched her coloring daily; sister Tricia Joyce and husband Philip of Auburn, MA, along with her children; Maureen Paradis and husband Mike of Lancaster, MA, Stephen Joyce and wife Melissa of Worcester, MA, and Erin Joyce of Auburn, MA; brother Denis Toomey of Chapel Hill, NC, along with his daughters Margaret Toomey and husband Charles Hall of Seattle, WA and Morrow Toomey; and sister Kathleen Duke and husband Steve of Burlington, MA along with children Jason Brush of Rutland, MA, Kenny Brush of North Andover, MA and Andrea Woods and husband Michael of Woburn; along with many cherished cousins, in-laws, friends and colleagues. She was predeceased by her sister, Elaine Toomey and nephew, Ronald Brush Jr.

A memorial mass will be held on APR. 21 at 10am. St Richard Parish. Per Marie’s request. Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of contributions to the Lahey Clinic Sophia Gordon Cancer Center, c/o Philanthropy, 41 Mall Rd., Burlington, MA 01805.

Patrick, I was so sorry to see the passing of Marie in the paper. I remember when I worked wth her at Bay Bank and Trust in Beverly. She became a good friend of mine there and we developed a friendship for several years. I caught her wedding bouquet at your wedding. I still have the picture. I also remember when you and Marie, myself and my now husband Walter would go up to the cocktail bar at the Northshore Mall where your friend Larry worked. I think that was his name. He lived across from the mall across the street. We all had a Halloween party there. He was a crazy guy. I'm talking early 70's. As time passes we lose sight of our friends as we are raising our families, but I saw Marie again when your daughter Jenna took dancing lessons in downtown Danvers when she was young. That was my sister's dance studio in which I worked as the bookkeeper. I was glad to see Marie each week here when Jenna had dance class. Time goes by too quickly and we can only remenience over our past. Marie was a funny girl and had a laugh that would make you laugh. I cherish those memories and knowing Marie. My heartfelt sympathy goes to you, your daughter, and your family. With sympathy, Cathy (Thompson) Jankowski
My heart and prayers go out to your family. All our love, Linda, Bob, Jenn, Jason Francis

Dear Pat and Jenna, So sorry to hear the sad news about Marie. I've been having a hard time trying to get in touch with her. We both have our birthday's in November, the 27th and 28th, (Marie seemed to always remember! :) and she sent me my yearly birthday card which put a big smile on my face! I was so happy to hear from her and I immediately got to reciprocate. Then a Christmas card came! I told her that I loved her.
